We begin today a new series, 7 Things that Make You Great… and I am excited to share this material with you!
Today, in Part 1, we kick off this series with a vital point.
Simply put – You, are one of a kind… a one-off.
Said another way, There has never been, nor will there ever be, another you.
This truth should affect us mightily for it is certainly a mighty truth. It should give us, as Paul Tillich famously said, the courage to be.
Eighteen years ago I wrote the following in my first book, Shadow Work:

Woody Allen has said that his one regret in life is that he is not someone else!
There is a lot of that going around. We have lost sight of our uniqueness—our incomparable one-of-a-kind-ness.
People are forever amazed over the fact that no two snowflakes are alike. Now, snowflakes are cool. Like everyone else, I too am fascinated by the fact that each one is unique.
But a far greater wonder to me is the fact that each and every human being is original.
This is true despite the fact that so many people are in a mad pursuit to forsake their Self and be someone else. When we do this, we surrender our uniqueness.
This is a curious thing. When someone abandons their uniqueness they cannot simply stop living.
So they begin to live life like an actor on a stage—an actor playing the role of a well-defined individual—which, of course, is what they would have been all along if only they had chosen to live out their unique God-created Self![/su_note]
So let me reiterate… you are one of a kind. You are, in the best sense of the word, an individual.
The Oxford English Dictionary gives it to us like this. An individual is – single, as distinct from others of the same kind; particular, special.
Singular, distinct, special. That’s cool.
And you know what? This truth doesn’t depend on where you were born, who your parents were, your social status, your looks, or anything else about your beginnings.
I want to tell you something that perhaps no one has ever told you before – it is within you to be incredible.
If you are one who really needed to hear that, why don’t you stop reading for a sec and just take that in. Let it settle down in you strong and good.
Now look, I’m not trying to blow smoke up your psyche. I’m not that guy.
There’s a lot involved in seeing that reality bear fruit in your life – and I’ll speak to that at the end of this post.
But the fact remains, it is within you to be incredible.
The Danish theologian Søren Kierkegaard wrote a book that should be required reading for every traveler interested in personal growth and wellbeing. Although 170 years old, Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing is fresh and relevant enough today to be on the New York Times best-seller list.
A hundred years before Jung developed his thoughts on individuation Kierkegaard wrote this,
“the consciousness before God of one’s eternal responsibility to be an individual is that one thing necessary.”
Man I love that! And I love how Kierkegaard worded it.
[su_quote]Hold it dearly to your heart. You are unique… one of a kind. And you have it within you to be incredible.[/su_quote]
We not only have the right to be an individual but, as Kierkegaard says, the responsibility to do so.
I believe we owe it to ourselves and to the God who made us – and uniquely made us – to see to it that our life counts. It’s our wonderful responsibility to do so.
Remember how I said above “there’s a lot involved in seeing that reality bear fruit in your life?” Well, I believe that process starts right here – with taking personal responsibility. In other words, for choosing see to it that our potential for being incredible comes to fruition.
The responsibility does not belong to your parents, your spouse, your boss… it doesn’t belong to society or the government.
It belongs to you.
Hold it dearly to your heart. You are unique… one of a kind. And you have it within you to be incredible.
Happy New Year… And here’s to you!
