But instead of getting better, she got worse. So her treatment was adjusted. In fact, her treatment was changed three different times. She continued to get worse. It was clear to everyone that if the real problem wasn’t discovered soon, she would die.
As a last-ditch effort, she was transferred to a hospital in a larger city where the real source of her problem was quickly identified and properly treated. She improved almost overnight and returned home within the week. (Turns out she had Lyme Disease caused by a tick bite.)

Each of these can be easily refuted, but let’s focus in on the last one.
Traditional thought says that one reason you suffer from anxiety is because you’re resisting it. They tell you to welcome anxiety into your life and embrace it as part of your personality. This thinking says that if you do that you will make peace with your anxiety and get on with your life.
First of all, if you’ve tried this approach — passively accepting your anxiety so you can make peace with it — well, how’s that working out for you?
Granted, there’s no doubt your anxiety is inside you.
But that does not mean it is native to you.
Said another way, just because your anxiety is inside you DOES NOT MEAN IT IS PART OF WHO YOU ARE . . . any more than a flu virus that invades your body is an innate part of you as a person.
Here’s an example of what I mean —
After recently battling an upper respiratory infection for three weeks, I finally gave in and went to the doctor — not because I wanted to learn how to incorporate the virus into my system, and certainly not because I wanted to “make peace with it” — but because I wanted to get rid of it!

It’s 3 a.m. and you are sound asleep. Suddenly you are jolted awake by a scratching noise at your kitchen door. The door creaks open. In horror, you realize that someone has just broken into your home!
What’s your first move after springing out of bed?
Naturally, you stride into the kitchen, greet the intruder, and then ask the thief to pull up a chair so you can get cozy and figure out how to come to some kind of peaceful co-existence!
OF COURSE YOU DON’T DO THAT!
Anxiety is no more a part of you than a thief who breaks into your home at 3 a.m. is part of your family!
Do you see now why traditional assumptions lead you in the wrong direction right out of the gate when they tell you to accept, embrace, and make peace with your anxiety? I sure hope so, because . . .

So far we’ve said a good bit about what anxiety is not. But what exactly IS anxiety?
I want to say this as clearly as I possibly can so there can be no mistake, no misunderstanding:
Anxiety is an INTERNALIZED BULLY wanting to make your life a living hell
Just like a bully, anxiety victimizes, intimidates, isolates, dominates, and crushes your spirit.
It holds you hostage to its power.
And this is precisely why common approaches to treating anxiety fail: you can’t negotiate with a bully — because it’s not in the nature of a bully to make peace.
A bully only responds to power. A bully does not back down until you show up and stand up.
Anxiety — an Internalized Bully

Maybe that’s because it’s easier to adopt conventional groupthink than to reason this through. Or maybe it’s just easier to prescribe medications that mask the symptoms rather than attack the problem at its core.*

But I do know this . . .
Before you can ever get rid of anxiety’s control over you, you must understand that ANXIETY IS NOT A COMPONENT OF YOUR TRUE SELF.

Get in a quiet place, get comfortable, and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths to quiet your mind. Then engage this simple question: In your deepest self, do you really believe the anxiety is an integral part of who you are?

If you actually believe your anxiety is a genuine part of your Self, then I’m not sure I can help you. Because you will have a very hard time convincing your mind to get rid of something you believe is truly part of you.

I will never tell you that you need to manage or accept pathological anxiety. I’m here to tell you something radically different.
I’m telling you that abnormal anxiety is a bully — an internalized bully that you cannot negotiate with and whose one desire is to make your life increasingly miserable.
You cannot manage or accept a bully. You have to stand up to it.
Could I ask you to take another minute now to make a promise to yourself?
